At first I was going to choose a photo of Versailles, after all that is almost the epitome of “rich” isn’t it? But then I remembered about Hardwick Hall and while it may nowadays seem modest in comparison to the grandeur of Versailles, it was, for it’s time a statement of wealth and power for the second richest women in 16th century England, Bess of Hardwick, the Countess of Shrewsbury, (Queen Elizabeth I was just a bit more wealthy).
The number and the size of the windows was an expression of enormous luxury for its time, just transporting this material in 1590 would have been incredibly difficult, and expensive. The exceptionally large windows led to the saying, “Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall.”
This house also featured as Malfoy Manor, (the home of the Malfoy’s, one of the richest families in the Harry Potter series), in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1, with some CGI changes.
